In my 5 years working in the school system, I have definitely had some memorable moments. Here are my top 3:
1. Being confused & laughed at because I didn't know what "The Pig" was. I gave a student the word "cash" to use in a sentence, and he said, "I can spend my cash at The Pig." Not being from or knowing much about the small, rural town I was in, they all laughed when I thought he was talking about putting money in a piggy bank. I then learned that "The Pig" was what they called Piggly Wiggly (grocery store).
2. Listening to a preschool student with articulation difficulties try to explain what babies eat (her mother was expecting at the time). After she said it 4 different times, and it sounded different each time, I guessed "bottles"...I was wrong, and mortally embarrased when I figured out what she was trying to say! I couldn't bring myself to tell her mom after the session.
3. The answers to "wh" questions in our middle school communication group. My favorites in particular were that the assistant principal is who puts out fires, trash cans are only used to throw up in, and being told what I was going to dress up as for Halloween (I went from a hot dog one year to Sleeping Beauty the next =) ).
There are so many wonderful times I've had over the past several years. I know that with each group of new students I work with, there will be hundreds more!
